Now that Eli is off of his drips and doesn't require heat they've decided to move Eli into a crib. We're excited as it is another sign that Eli is doing well in spite of some recent issues with his kidneys.
The other day they noticed on an MRI that Eli's kidneys still were still looking pretty bad. Yesterday they noticed Eli's blood pressure was too high - a condition that can be traced back to poorly functioning kidneys. We don't really know exactly what is wrong with them except that they don't look good on Ultrasounds and MRIs and some of the electrolite numbers are off. With Eli being as sick as he was it is understandable that his kidneys would take a pretty hard hit and so we're hoping with more time as Eli gets better his kidneys will follow.
I've had several people ask about how Eli's lungs are doing and what is the status of his PPHN and Pulmonary Vascular Hypoplasia (his lung problems). This is where Eli's recovery has been miraculous.
After his surgey, the doctors had thrown every intervention they knew of at Eli to help his lungs oxygenate his blood, but Eli wasn't responding to any of them. As I wrote in earlier posts, Eli was on over 10 different medications plus a ventilator just for him to be able to barely get oxygen into his blood. They finally discovered that Eli's vessels in his lungs were underdeveloped. This explained why it was so hard for his lungs to function. The prognosis was shady and we were told Eli was no longer viable for the ECMO machine as an alternative to help him breathe. Miraculously, Eli slowly began to recover in spite of what the doctors said. They slowly weaned him from his plethora of medications as well as from his ventilator and the pure oxygen he was breathing.
With the problems that Eli had, none of the doctors expected anything remotely near to a quick recovery, and all of them were surprised as Eli continued to progress. They've since taken several more ECHOs and in all of them they have failed to spot the Pulmonary Vascular Hypoplasia (the underdeveloped blood vessels in his lungs). It is as if that defective part of his lungs healed overnight, because they could see it in one ECHO and when they went to look at it again it wasn't there. We credit the power of priesthood blessings and the prayers of our friends, family and neighbors. The doctor said with what he knows about Eli now, he doesn't expect his lungs to cause him any long term trouble.
We're super grateful to God and to everyone who has prayed for Eli and Noah. Now Eli's kidneys just need to heal and he has to learn to eat. Those are the two major things keeping him in the hospital for now.
